Fate of Chinnock Hollow remains in balance after landslide | Somerset County Gazette

The fate of a key stretch of road near Yeovil remains in the balance, 20 months after a landslide sealed it off.

Chinnock Hollow runs from the A30 High Street in East Chinnock through Odcombe and onto the western edge of Yeovil.

It has been shut since February 21, 2021 after the landslide caused 20 tonnes of debris to roll down the side of the 12-metre wall along the road, burying it.

Somerset County Council suggested four options for its future and residents gave their views at a meeting on Wednesday (October 12).

The council has declined to confirm which option will be taken forward. This means the closure could continue beyond Christmas and into early 2023.

Councillor Mike Hewitson said the feedback from the public meeting would inform which option would be pursued. He declined to confirm how soon such a decision would be taken.

Councillor Oliver Patrick said: “We have listened to local farmers, horse riders, and walkers who wanted to access the bridleway in the Hollow – so we got the safety barrier moved back.

“We are also committed to rigorous public engagement because we believe community is key."
