ITANAGAR: The Border Roads Organization (BRO), has successfully brought a permanent solution to the nagging problem of massive landslides that occur annually at the strategic Tama-Chung Chung-Taksing defence road in the Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to a directive of Director General of Border Roads (DGBR) Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, the personnel of the construction agency through innovative methods, stabilized landslides in December last year in the vital road along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), an official informed on Thursday.

Landslide is an annual phenomenon in young fold mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, which are prone to heavy landslides due to intense rainfalls and flash floods.

"No damage due to landslide and erosion has been reported in the entire slope of a mountain with a height of over 225 metres along the defence road so far since December last year," Project Arunanak chief engineer Brig Anirudh S Kanwar informed after inspecting the executed works on Thursday.

Explaining the details of the method adopted to check landslide, Brig Kanwar informed that the 128 Road Construction Company commanding officer Lt Col Abhimanyu Kadian and 23 Border Road Task Force commander Magraj Kumar, under his supervision, used latest technology to take series of actions, including anchoring of hill slopes with shelf-drilling anchors, grouting with cement, placing of anti-erosion mats made of fully biodegradable coir fibre reinforced with polypropylene netting, use of double twisted hexagonal shaped wire mesh and placing of high tensile rolled cable net.

"This was followed by seed spreading to enable growth of vegetation even in rocky strata. This resulted in stabilization of the entire slope with a height of over 225 metre," the chief engineer added.

Mra village headman Tai Mara, a very influential local leader, lauded the BRO for its work to prevent landslides and advocated more such initiatives along the sensitive border road. Massive and incessant rainfalls this year led to heavy landslides at various parts of the State claiming 12 lives, snapping road communication, damaging public and private properties.
