According to a nutritionist, 5 ways to make Costco baked goods healthier-don’t eat this

To be honest, Costco’s bakery is probably the best part of this store. It is full of delicacies, such as biscuits, muffins, pies, etc. However, if you want to eat healthy, Costco's bakery may be the sum of calories and sugar. But instead of avoiding the bakery altogether, let yourself be indulged once in a while. Moderation is the key!

But besides moderation, there are other ways you can snap up those baked goods without feeling that you have put aside a healthy diet. Kacie Barnes, MCN, RDN, Dallas-based mamaknowsnutrition.com nutritionist has some guidance on how to do this so you can have your Costco cake and eat it.

Barnes recommends that you don't let the whole meal come from the bakery, but recommend eating it with protein, fruits and vegetables so that you can eat a more comprehensive meal.

"If you want to eat baked goods at breakfast, you can add milk to the coffee to get some protein, or put a hard-boiled egg and some fruit next to it," she said. "It will make you fuller, and fruit will provide fiber, which is usually lacking in baked goods."

When you know that you want to eat something indulgent, you might think that "saving" your calories earlier in the day to splurge later is the way to go. However, Barnes warns against this because it makes you more likely to squander too much.

Barnes said: "If you deprive yourself of your rights earlier in the day, when you eat bakery food, you are actually more likely to overeat, and if you fuel yourself appropriately throughout the day, you You will eat more.” Instead, eat your usual day’s food and let yourself enjoy baked goods once in a while.

If you allow yourself to enjoy the food in the bakery, make sure you eat it slowly and really enjoy it. Eliminate any distractions during your meal and focus on what you put in your mouth. Enjoying your food thoroughly can help you be more satisfied after you finish, which can encourage you not to overeat.

"If you are distracted, watching the screen, driving, etc., you won't even feel like you are eating, let alone satisfied with the experience," Barnes pointed out.

It's easy and tempting to go to the Costco bakery to buy sweets directly, but all of Costco's baked goods are very delicious. If you cannot resist stopping at the bakery on the way to the warehouse, look for slightly healthier items.

Barnes recommends using sprouted grains if your Costco has something of this nature. (Costco may be different, so you have to see what your store has.) At least, she recommends avoiding one type of bread: sourdough.

"There is a saying that sourdough bread is a good source of probiotics, but they can't actually survive the baking process," she shared. In addition, the refined flour in this bread is not always the best choice, she points out. Refined carbohydrates are low in fiber and are associated with weight gain, so if you are looking for healthy food, sourdough may not be.

If you don’t know, many of Costco’s baked goods are actually multiple servings. Giant muffins are not designed to be eaten in one sitting. You can go a step further and cut your muffins or biscuits into small pieces so you can control the number of calories, fat and sugar you eat.

In this way, you can still enjoy the food without overdoing it. Barnes even recommends adding nut butter to your muffin section to increase protein and some healthy fats.
